Helping EGV Businesses Put Safety First

In all its forms, workplace crime is an ongoing concern for employers nationwide. Fortunately in Elk Grove Village, businesses don't have to tackle the issue alone. The Elk Grove Village Police Department offers an array of free programs to support businesses in improving security, reducing risk, and helping employees stay safe at work and beyond.

A financial service company in Elk Grove Village reached out to the Elk Grove Police Department's Crime Prevention Section, wondering if someone could give a safety presentation to employees' children on Take Your Child to Work Day.

Subsequently, an Elk Grove police officer visited the company's offices and talked about bullying to a group of 80 children. It was just one example of how the Elk Grove Police Department is happy to partner with local businesses.

With leadership and officers hailing from top police academies and training agencies in the country, including the FBI Academy, the Elk Grove Village Police Department is committed to excellence. More so, the Department is fully accredited by the National Commission on the Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies — a status gained by only 3% of U.S. law enforcement agencies.

Commitment to excellence extends to the Department's Crime Prevention Section, a unit of the Support Services Division. Crime Prevention officers develop, present and participate in a variety of programs designed to enhance safety for all those who live or work in Elk Grove Village:

Poor lighting, overgrown landscape, and other environmental factors all can increase risk of burglary and other criminal activity. Before you pay an outside consultant, contact the Crime Prevention team. Officers are certified through the National Crime Prevention Council's Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Training Program, which means they can expertly assess the physical environment around your building and make recommendations to heighten safety and security.

In-Service Programs
The Crime Prevention team is continually developing free programs to raise safety awareness in the community. One recent presentation at a manufacturing company touched on how to stay safe at home. The company even received a CD containing the presentation, so that it could be shared with shift workers not in attendance for the actual presentation. Other in-service programs have addressed workplace violence, social media and Internet safety, and scams.

Extra Watch
In addition to its own routine patrols, the Elk Grove Police Department participates in Waste Management's WasteWatch program, which trains collection drivers to be additional "eyes on the street." Drivers are trained to observe and report suspicious activity and emergency situations to law enforcement — not act as law officers or emergency personnel.
