    Elk Grove Village opts out of Cook County minimum wage hike

    Elk Grove Village formally opted out of a Cook County ordinance to increase the minimum wage and require sick-leave time.

    The village board unanimously voted Tuesday to opt out of the minimum wage plan, which gradually increases the minimum wage to $13 an hour over the next three years. Another ordinance requires employers to provide one hour of sick leave per 40 hours of work, or about 5 days per year.

    Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson unveiled the outline of the largest capital works plan in the village's history Tuesday evening.

    The plan, called Elk Grove 2025, is estimated to cost $105 million and could start within weeks, Johnson said. It focuses on many fronts, from a new fire station and new public works building to median enhancements and road improvement projects.

    Elk Grove Village has reinvested in its industrial properties over the last 10 years, and it's paid off.

    In 2016, the northwest suburb's industrial vacancy rate hit 3.98 percent, the lowest among Cook County municipalities in the O'Hare Industrial Market. Since 2010, the vacancy rate has dropped more than 65 percent after starting at 12.49 percent. The village also maintains the highest absorption rate at more than 275,000 square feet.

    He never expected to be hosting a talk show. Now he is.

    New TV ad spotlights Elk Grove pinball maker's decision to stay local

    A Melrose Park pinball machine manufacturer was courted by officials from three states as it tried to find a larger warehouse for its ever-growing business.

    Company officials even received a call from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who tried to lure them across the border.

    But the pinball wizards only moved 10 miles away to Elk Grove Village, and now they're getting some free publicity because of it.

    Stern Pinball is the subject of the latest Elk Grove television commercial, part of a village-funded $500,000 advertising campaign that launched last spring. It includes TV, radio and print advertisements, as well as billboards throughout the O'Hare region. The 30-second TV spot has been running on local stations for the past week.

    JLL reports Elk Grove Village at top industrial real estate market

    A recent report by JLL shows the O'Hare real estate market, which includes Elk Grove Village, tops the Port, Airport, & Global Infrastructure (PAGI) ranking report.

    The PAGI report was created to grade airports from the vantage point of the real estate stakeholder — "those who invest in, develop, or occupy industrial properties in airport-centric locations." The report notes the O'Hare region's "large population base, central geographic location, complementary rail assets and enormous industrial market" — all of which are important location drivers.

    Elk Grove Village, which is adjacent to O'Hare International Airport, is home to the largest industrial park in the United States. With over 62 million square feet of inventory, Elk Grove makes up approximately 50 percent of the O'Hare industrial real estate market.     Flip Switch on Pinball Builder's New Digs

    After Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker tried to woo then Melrose Park-based Stern Pinball to his state, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson toured Stern's new facilities last week following the company's move here.

    Stern completed their move in early May into a 110,000 sq. ft. facility with 200 parking spaces at 2001 Lunt Ave. where two assembly lines are up and running in a building Stern leases from Prologis.

    Elk Grove Named One of "10 Best Places to Start a Business in Illinois"

    NrdWallet recently analyzed 285 communities in Illinois, each with a population of 5,000+, to come up with their list of the "10 Best Places to Start a Business in Illinois." NerdWallet cites the collaborative spirit found in Chicagoland as well as focusing on business fundamentals as part of the strong business climate in the suburbs around the city.

    Elk Grove Village ranked #7 on the list, using such factors as local business climate, local economic health, local unemployment rate, median annual income and median annual housing cost. It credits Elk Grove Village with the largest population and the largest number of businesses of the cities on the list, as well as having an Office of Economic Development & Marketing to attract and retain businesses.

    Ek Grove Village has been honored with a 2015 Playful City USA designation for the first time. The national recognition program honors 241 cities and towns across the country for making their communities more playable. There were only three cities chosen from Illinois: Elk Grove Village, Chicago and Waterloo.

    Elk Grove to Spend $500,000 on Industrial Park Marketing Campaign

    The village will spend $500,000 on a six-month advertising campaign to lure businesses to its industrial park, which the village says is the largest contiguous one in the country, Mayor Craig Mayor Johnson said.

    Johnson, in his annual state of the village address to the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce, said the campaign is meant to counteract other states' efforts to steal businesses.
